Øya Festival wins acclaim from Hindu statesmen

| On 18, Aug 2010

Leading Hindus have applauded Norway’s Øya Festival for being a sustainable and green festival, calling it “a step in the right direction”.

The festival, which took place last weekend August 10th– 14th was held in a Medieval Park in Gamlebyen, Oslo (Norway), and saw stand out  shows from the likes of M.I.A, The xx, Iggy & The Stooges, Pavement, Paul Weller, The Flaming Lips, Robyn and LCD Soundsystem.

Noted Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, urged other music festivals, music groups and musicians of the world to embrace Øya’s philosophy of looking at the environment from planning to closing and beyond and management in between. Rajan Zed pointed out that ancient Hindu scriptures, especially Atharva-Veda, were highly respectful of mother nature. “It is cool to be green”, Zed added.

Litter at the Festival was sorted into 14 different categories, food was organic and sourced locally, electric and hydrogen-powered cars were used by staff on the site, its four stages were powered by 100% renewable energy sourced from hydroelectric dam instead of polluting generators, it provided eco-friendly diaper change stand and eco-labeled sunblock. Stein Arne Blomseth was the Festival Manager. (ANI).

Øya Festival won the Green ‘n’ Clean Award at the European Festival Awards and is now officially the greenest festival in Europe.

Last December, Øya was named Oslo’s greenest business in 2009 by Grønn Hverdag (Green Living), a network of people, groups and organizations working together to raise consciousness about environmental choices in everyday life.
