The Wombats Announce ‘Tokyo Karaoke Video Challenge’ for chance to star in the next Wombats’ video

| On 16, Sep 2010

The Wombats have announced a karaoke competition for fans worldwide to win the chance to be the stars of their next video.  The competition involves fans singing along to The Wombats’ very own custom-made karaoke video for upcoming single ‘Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves)’, released on September 27th through 14th Floor Records. The video has strictly followed the traditional art of the karaoke video with use of abstract 80s style graphics, random members of the public ambling down the street and close-up beach shots that bear no relation to the song.  Fans are being asked to film themselves singing karaoke to the video and to upload the results as a response on youtube; the best of which will be chosen for inclusion in the next Wombats’ video.

The anticipation surrounding the return of The Wombats continues to escalate. Their upcoming single ‘Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)’ received a glorious global premiere on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 where it was named the Hottest Record In The World and was swiftly followed by the news that their October tour dates sold out almost immediately. ‘Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)’ has also since been named as Zane Lowe’s Single of the Week.

The latest development comes with the confirmation of a full UK and Ireland tour that culminates with a sizeable London date at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo. Renowned as one of the nation’s most incendiary live bands and also confirmed as one of the major attractions at Australia’s touring Parklife festival.

The Wombats have just returned to Los Angeles to complete work on their second album with producer Rich Costey (Muse, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand) having already collaborated on the project with Jacknife Lee (U2, Snow Patrol, R.E.M.) and Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Lostprophets). The immediately infectious punky hooks that characterised their debut album are firmly in place, but this time around the band have been eager to experiment with more leftfield ideas and a darker lyrical approach.

Following the release of their debut album ‘The Wombats Proudly Present… A Guide To Love, Loss and Desperation’, the band’s ascendency continued unabated. The Wombats completed two huge sold-out UK tours which included triumphant shows at Brixton Academy, a unique one-off headline show at London’s Royal Albert Hall and a massive homecoming show at the 10,000 capacity Liverpool Echo Arena. They were nominated for Best UK Act at the MTV Europe Awards, and played a plethora of enormous festival appearances including a co-headline set on the NME/Radio 1 stage at Reading and Leeds as well as storming sets at Glastonbury, T in the Park, Isle of Wight and Oxegen.
