Club debut for Brooklyn-based, rising-star pianist Aaron Parks and his world-class trio. Like his Blue Note label mate Robert Glasper, Parks is an alumni of trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s band, and while he revels in the rhythmic and harmonic complexity of jazz he draws on a much wider palate of contemporary music. His brilliant, highly original music has a noirish, cinematic feel that won him rave reviews from critics on both sides of the Atlantic with Jazz Times hailing him a ‘New Visionary” and the Guardian as a ‘Rising-star”. Parks appears with bassist Matt Bewer and drummer Ted Poor.

COURTNEY PINE Presents EUROPA Album Launch Shows

A giant of the British music scene, Courtney Pine melds a wide variety of influences into his music. The saxophonist and clarinetist has deftly incorporated reggae, electronica, hip-hop, funk and Eastern sounds into his boundary-defying repertoire, working alongside luminaries in each genre. These very special shows find Pine launching his latest, acclaimed album Europa, an ambitious exploration of the very idea of the European continent and the forces that have shaped it, drawing on influences from Gregorian chant to Scandinavian, Celtic, Hungarian and Mediterranean melodies and beyond. Featuring Pine on bass clarinet, Robert Fordjour, drums, Darren Taylor double bass,  Zoe Rahman  piano,  Cameron Pierre mandolin and acoustic guitar,  Omar Puente electric violin and  Amanda Drummond viola.

Glasgow-born Hamish Stuart shot to fame in the 1970’s as the falsetto voice and guitarist of the Average White Band. His distinctive songwriting and vocal and guitar style helping pave the way to AWB’s extraordinary worldwide success. Since AWB split up Stuart has worked with the likes of Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and George Benson.

Legendary composer, singer, bassist and multi-instrumentalist whose pioneering,  full-toned, free-wheeling playing on the electric bass revolutionised the way the instrument is used and influenced the playing of countless bassists from Sting to Jaco Pastorius.  His work with bands such as Cream and the Tony Williams Lifetime, as well as his solo material, unlocked the doors to the pent-up energy of a new approach to the art of sound, breaking the barriers of tradition and creating a kind of music that had never been heard.

Hosted by the wonderfully charismatic and supremely talented soul singer Natalie Williams and her band, Soul Family Sunday is a monthly event presenting a host of top-notch guests from the world of UK R&B, soul and jazz.  Blessed with a huge range, Williams moves effortlessly between heart-rending ballads, funky originals and deft swing and these Sunday night shows have in the past featured the likes of Gwyneth Herbert, Roachford, Beth Rowley, Terri Walker and even Jamie Cullum!

Arguably the best jazz singer of her generation, Dee Dee Bridgewater sang with Roy Ayers and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra in the ‘70s and appeared in the Broadway musical The Wiz. But it was in the late ’80s and a series of fantastic albums for the Verve label that she received international acclaim, including a Grammy award-winning celebration of Ella and more recent recordings of French Chanson, Kurt Weill and last year’s brilliant ‘To Billie With Love’, a heart felt celebration of Billie Holiday. It was after the Billie Holiday show at the Barbican that she became stranded in London due to the volcanic ash cloud and did an impromptu performance at the club. She had such a great time that she vowed to come back! On Monday to Thursday she’ll be appearing with her world class band (Craig Handy sax and reeds, Edsel Gomez Rentas piano, Kenny Davis bass and Shaney Forbes drums ) and on Friday in a very special concert recording with the BBC Big Band.

THE AFRICAN JAZZ ALLSTARS

Africa’s finest jazz orchestra returns with their blistering big band funk, imaginative jazz solos and irresistible African rhythms. Led by legendary African jazz guitarist Lucky Ranku, the rhythm section features inventive pianist Adam Glasser, power house drummer Brice Wassey, conga legend Lekan Babalola, and bassist Kaz Kasozi. The stellar horn section features powerful, vibrant trumpeter Claude Deppa, trombonist Fayyaz Virji, creative alto saxophonist Tony Kofi, soulful tenor saxophonist Bukky Leo, baritone saxophonist Greg Bonnie. Vocals are courtesy of the queen of African jazz Pinise Saul.

Led by top-notch funk, blues and jazz guitarist/vocalist Tony Remy (Incognito, Annie Lennox and Craig David), the electrifying Blues Experience specialise in blues music from Chicago to the Delta, West Coast and British. Expect blues classics from Eric Clapton, BB King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Albert King, Peter Green, Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Cray amongst others. All delivered by a top notch band featuring the likes of guitarist Eddie Angel, keyboardist Paddy Milner, bassist Nick Cohen, drummer Frank Tontoh, the Winston Rollins Horns and special guests.

ANDREAS VARADY QUARTET

At thirteen years of age, Slovakia-born, Hungarian gypsy Andreas Varady is the youngest musician ever to headline Ronnie Scott’s.  Already dubbed a “guitar genius”, and “incredibly gifted” by local media, “the boy who’s not much bigger than his guitar” claims the Belfast Telegraph “has become something of a sensation”. Educated by his father, Bandi, since the age of four, his family moved to Ireland when he was 11 and it was there he first reached a national audience on RTE’s ‘The Guitar’ competition, and he has gone onto perform with many of his guitar heroes including Martin Taylor, who has announced Varady as the first to receive a scholarship to the Martin Taylor Academy. He appears here with Irish drummer, David Lyttle, US bassist Michael Janisch and his father Bandi Varady on rhythm guitar.

Top class acoustic pianist and keyboardist equally at home with impressionistic jazz and funky fusion and who has worked with the likes of Wayne Shorter, Peter Gabriel and Stanley Clarke. She is joined her by acoustic bassist Solomon Dorsey and legendary drummer Omar Hakim (Weather Report, Sting, Miles Davis and David Bowie). Expect classy re-workings of material by such artists as Duke Ellington, Depeche Mode, Wayne Shorter, Joni Mitchell, Judy Garland, Sting, Peter Gabriel, The Killers, Coldplay, Stone Temple Pilots, and Björk. A regular visitor to the UK she appears here with her superb band featuring Helio Alves, piano, Rodolfo Stroeter, bass and the great Tutty Moreno on drums. Skip “Little Axe” McDonald + The Baker Brothers (double bill)

Legendary blues and funk guitarist Skip McDonald was a member of Wood, Brass and Steel and in the house band of Sugar Hill Records, playing on such seminal early hip-hop records as Grandmaster Flash’s The Message. He appears here in a fine double-bill with explosive funk outfit the Baker Brothers.
