Reaching into the far corners of the globe, the Rhythmic Frontiers Festival sees F-IRE Collective once again cross the boundaries of jazz, world and roots music. The festival explores traditions old and new, with some new collaborations in an exciting series of concerts ranging from Gypsy music from Budapest with Tcha Limberger to Iranian drumming from Keyvan Chemirani and bebop from Django Bates. The festival also includes shows from Stéphane Payen’s supergroup Thôt, Jonny Phillips’ Oriole and leading on from F-IRE’s educational work, a team of students from the Royal Academy of Music and further afield, playing music from the frontiers of world rhythm.

There will be free presentations mapping the frontiers of world rhythm before each evening’s events.

‘Having heard Charlie Parker’s music from my birth onwards, I knew it was good in the way that I knew that food was good. It was nutrition: a life force. I found my hero. The acoustic piano trio is a constellation beloved of jazz listeners and players throughout the world. Seeing the Bill Evans trio at Ronnie Scott’s weeks before he died, and The Bad Plus in Cambridge, were two of my most memorable musical experiences. I decided to use the classic trio line-up for my exploration of Bird’s music.‘   Django Bates
