The Strange Death of Liberal England – Come on You Young Philosophers

| On 08, May 2011

It’s quite a hard job to categorize what The Strange Death of Liberal England are trying to achieve with their new single.  The band’s sound can simply be dubbed as ‘happy’ more than anything; they don’t really fall into any obvious genre.  The groups sound seems to strangely contrast itself throughout, with indie influenced drums thrown together with bizarre music that doesn’t really seem to fit.

Of the bands two tracks, their stronger entry by far is Come on You Young Philosophers, which despite some very suspect vocals and very annoying backing instruments sounds considerably better than b-side Sometimes I need you, which comes across as pure country dross.  The group have attempted to establish a distinctive sound on both numbers, but as great as a unique sound is, some bands just go overboard and the end result is messier than the Kaiser Chiefs last album, and this is the case for The Strange Death of Liberal England.

The band needs to define their sound if they want to grow into an impressive act.  After listening to their two track single there isn’t a great deal of evidence that TSDoLE have anything to offer the music world, maybe one day they’ll prove me wrong (not likely).
