Guided by Voices confirmed for Øya Festival 2011

August 9th-13th
www.Øyafestivalen.com

First performance in Europe since 2002, and the only planned reunion date in Europe in 2011

Øya is delighted to confirm 2011’s festival will see appearances from legendary Ohio rock band Guided by Voices. This will mark the band’s first performance in Europe since 2002, and their only planned reunion date in Europe in 2011.

After breaking up Guided By Voices in 2004, Robert Pollard has reunited the “classic” Guided By Voices line-up for a very limited number of dates. Tobin Sprout (guitar) Charles “Mitch” Mitchell (guitar), Greg Demos (bass) and Kevin Fennel (drums) will be joining Pollard on classic GBV songs from 1992-1996 from the albums Propeller, Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes and Under The Bushes, Under The Stars.

Since GBV’s breakup, their 1994 album Bee Thousand was heralded by Amazon.com at the top of their list (#1) of the “100 Greatest Indie Rock Albums Of All Time” and Spin magazine picked the record as #26 in the “Top Records of the Past 25 Years.”

“If Matador at 21 were a game, Guided by Voices would’ve won — they earned the most encores, the most fist pumping, the most singalongs, the most pushing against the stage and the most chanting of the whole weekend.” – L.A Times, 2010

“Guided By Voices capped the (Matador) weekend with an amazing high-energy set…” – Rolling Stone, 2010

“Pollard’s hooks have always ranked among rock’s best.” – Wall Street Journal, 2010

“Since late 2008 or so, Pollard has enjoyed a late-career renaissance, consistently rewarding those of us still paying attention.” – Pitchfork, 2010

They join previously confirmed headliners Aphex Twin, Q-Tip, Noah and the Whale and Hercules & Love Affair.

Øya festival is the largest outdoor music festival in Oslo, the capital of Norway and one of the most discerning in Europe.

Øya is held in a medieval park, a picturesque spot surrounded by sandy beaches, the Oslo Fjords, the green Ekeberg Hill and the Oslo skyline. Rooted deep in history, the medieval park is also the place where the capital of Norway was founded a thousand years ago. For 4 days in the middle of August, the Medieval Park in Oslo is transformed into an arena for musical, visual and cross-cultural performances. The Øya Festival is an energetic and symbiotic experience with a unique atmosphere and audience that bares resemblance to no other.

Amidst the festival area of trees, green grass and water, the festival is well equipped with stages, shopping streets and small shops serving food (almost 100% organic and locally sourced) and drink. The site creates an exciting rendezvous between nature and culture, being just a short walk from the city centre of Oslo.

Øya Festival is officially recognised as one of the greenest festivals in Europe, having won the “Greenest Festival in Europe” at the European Festival Awards 2010 and also the ”Green ’n’ Clean” award.

“One of the most discerning music programmes on offer anywhere in Europe” – The Guardian Guide

“It´s the line-up of Primavera but without the scorching heat, the good-spirited nature of Glastonbury without the tumults of people, the eclecticism of Bestival without
15 middle-aged men dressed as Duracell bunnies; Øya is essentially, pretty much all the good bits rolled into one glorious bundle” – NME

“A beautiful setting” – The Daily Telegraph

“A huge four-day spectacular” – The Guardian

“One of Europe’s premier festivals” Time Out

“An immensely enjoyable festival ” – Drowned in Sound

“Bears a close resemblance to Paradise when sunny” – The Quietus

“A gorgeous location” Notion

“Oya Festival, the greenest festival this side of Uranus” The Fly

“Basically Øya is a dream-come-true for music fans” Gigwise
