“Boy, this girl is something special” Bob Harris

Rita Hosking is touring the UK in October accompanied by veteran English folk-blues singer-songwriter & guitarist Michael Chapman – see itinerary overleaf.

Rita Hosking’s latest LP, Burn, is aptly named for a set of luminous country-folk songs that explore the soul of working America, from a miner’s daughter to a Gulf shrimper, to staring into a sink full of dirty dishes. Whether it’s poetry in demolition derby or paradox in our vernacular, Hosking finds it with poignant grace, and delivers it with a fiery intensity. Her fourth album, she describes how Burn gets its title, “burning is not just a chemical process, it’s a development and release of emotions, a cathartic event.”

The first cut on the record, ‘Something You Got’, is Hosking’s first “real love song”, written for her husband, Sean Feder, who plays banjo, Dobro, and percussion on the album.” This came up one evening when I was joking about how I hadn’t written him one yet, but I wanted to…so you get the first line—‘I wanna write you a pretty love song.’”

‘Crash and Burn’ (track 3), nearest namesake to the title, is a story of a barrel-racing woman who, like her beau, learns to embrace demolition derby – including the crowd’s hunger for fire. “We went to derbies as a child since they were often paired with horse shows at county fairs. When I saw last year that my childhood house is now inhabited by a derby driver, I realized it was time to integrate demo derby into my spiritual center.”

Burn was recorded in the heat of Austin, Texas with ace producer and musician, Rich Brotherton. Brotherton also produced Rita’s last record, Come Sunrise, which received Best Country Album Vox Pop in the 2010 Independent Music Awards. The cast of supporting musicians include Brotherton, more members of the Robert Earl Keen Band – Tom Van Schaik and Marty Muse, Glenn Fukunaga, and members of Rita’s live ensemble, Sean Feder, and Andy Lentz.

Since signing with esteemed Americana Agency in the U.S. and Grapevine Music Agency in the U.K., Rita has toured nationally and internationally including venues such as Strawberry Music Festival, The SummerTyne Americana Festival, Kate Wolf Music Festival and a live appearance on the BBC’s internationally acclaimed Bob Harris Show.

Praise for Come Sunrise

“Impressive and classy. Her songs are compassionate tales about ordinary folk but there is anger as well as warmth in her voice.” The Observer

“There’s a grit to her songs and sinewy toughness to her voice that weave their own spell.” Q Magazine

“It’s no surprise that Come Sunrise has been shortlisted for Independent Country Album of the Year in the US.” The Irish Times

“You can’t help but be caught up in the rapture this talented and gifted artist has to offer on this wonderful and evocative CD.” Maverick

“Like Nanci Griffith she has a way of taking tales of hardship, adversity and even death and crafting them into intense and heartfelt masterpieces.” Country Music People

“…the best-kept secret in the country-folk traditionalist movement…Hosking is a native of the mountains of Shasta County in Northern California, a descendant of Cornish miners, and you can hear that history through every breath of her intense delivery.” R2 Magazine

“Hosking’s lyrics hit the spot every time and the songs sound as if they’ve always been here, a sure-fire sign that she has hit the songwriter’s motherlode. Highly recommended.” Americana-UK
