SMOD – Les Dirigeants Africains (African Leaders)

| On 16, Oct 2011

SMOD, a West African Malian musical trio established in 2000, comprises Sam, Ousco and Donsky. The original name of the band was an acronym of their first names, but also a common pet name given to a loved one.

Their sounds are a fusion of rap, blues, folk and hip hop. Traditional music, soothing harmonies and acoustic guitars combine to deliver a message of unity and equality.

Their politically-conscious third self-titled album, SMOD, recorded in Mali and France, was produced by collaboration with Manu Chao . It helped make them a well known name in world music and is released on Because Music.

Les Dirigeants Africains (meaning the African leaders in French), a single release from the same album, is released on 17th October, 2011. It’s a warm, compelling, bouncy song which is an accusation against those who run Africa and uses impassioned French lyrics. The intention is to show people that today’s young Africans are weary of injustice, theft and corruption.

Ousco says that “Africa needs to speak out right now.” He believes that “Africa must stop crying” and it’s the fun, joy and liveliness of this song which will help wipe away the tears.
