Famous for it’s legendary ’70’s – 80’s rock concerts and ‘Proms In The Park’, in June 2012 both the rock and the pomp returns to the stunningly beautiful and easily accessible Crystal Palace Park bowl for a 2 day event in the park’s Concert Bowl; a natural and picturesque amphitheatre set beside a scenic lake that has a fine tradition as a music festival space. Previously fielding the likes of Rock and music Legends: Pink Floyd, Yes, Jeff Beck, Santana, the Beach Boys, Rod Stewart and Bob Marley and the Wailers and many others, as well as the Cure more recently.

Saturday sees rock return to it’s 70’s – 80’s roots with legendary keyboard maestro Rick Wakeman (pictured), HawkwindFocus, Curved Air and more to be confirmed, whilst Sunday sees a celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with classical music in the form of a Jubliee Proms – featuring The London Gala Symphony Orchestra with the stunningly beautiful and talented soloist Juliette Pochin (pictured). The event will also feature other musical and fun distractions and continue the park’s other great tradition of PROMS music in this terrific space.

Rick’s line up will be what is considered to be the “classic ” English Rock Ensemble line-up, with Ashley Holt on vocals , who was the orognal vocalist on Journey to The Centre of the Earth, King Arthur and No Earthly Connection. On drums will be Tony “Greasy Wop” Fernandez who has been pretty much ever present since 1975.

Rick’s first choice guitarist Dave Colquhoun has been in the band for 8 years and Lee Pomeroy, considered by many to be the finest prog rock bass player for decades has been with the band for 12 years.

As regards the music, Rick’s set will be very much the classic stuff with more than a few surprises thrown in for good measure. Guranteed will be pieces froim the Six Wives of Henry VIII , Journey to the Centre of the Earth and King Arthur. This will be the only performance in the UK this year and the bands first since the Cropredy Festival three years ago , for which they received truly sensational reviews, and Rick will be available for UK press interviews in advance of the event.

In addition to the music both days will also feature an array of other attractions, including comedy and Shakespeare excerpts in the maze, funfair rides, performance artists, many other fun attractions and diversions as well as a mouth watering selection of food and drink.

The London Gala Symphony Orchestra was originally formed to accompany travelling ballet companies visiting London such as the Russian Bolshoi Ballet Australian, Canadian, Stuttgart, Moscow, Berlin and the Japanese Takarazuka Dance Theatre. performing with them at London’s Coliseum and Sadler’s Wells as well as on all their tours of Britain.

The L.G.O. soon became recognised as part of London’s musical scene and was invited by major choral societies (Royal Choral, London Welsh and the Malcolm Sargent) to accompany them at London’s Royal Albert and Royal Festival Halls. It was also a regular guest at the E.R.M.A. childrens’ concerts on the South Bank and the Arthur Davison family concerts at the Fairfield Halls Croydon – an association which still continues today. More recently it has been engaged to perform gala concerts at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and has performed in the presence of her Majesty the Queen and Prince Edward. The L.G.S.O. is proud to have worked with many artists including Josephine Barstow, Leland Chen, Sarah Chang, Robert Cohen, John Lill, Willard White, Chloe Hanslip, Benjamin Grosvenor and the world famous Placido Domingo.

The orchestra has become heavily involved in popular and PROMS concerts which appeal to a wide cross-section of the public. In this context it has worked with performers such as the musical comedian Rainer Hersch, the broadcaster Trevor MacDonald, the Drambuie Pipe Band, the folk group Szaparo and the Munich based Music Productions Germany. Every year it performs at the Johann Strauss Society of Great Britain’s annual dinner. It has also provided music for the BAFTA nominated short film Red Peppers.

Juliette Pochin – Cambridge educated, Juliette has a hugely varied and successful career as singer, composer, and Brit-nominated record producer – from singing the Angel in Dream of Gerontius with the CBSO to writing the music for The Kumars at No.42. She released her critically acclaimed debut album Venezia in 2006 (Classic FM Record of the Week), and the follow up – The Domestic Diva – released to further acclaim in 2009. As well as her international performing career, she is a regular anthem singer at Wembley and the Millenium Stadiums and has performed for the UN.
