AAA Music Approved: The Graphite Set

AAAmusic: Who are you and where are you from?
The Graphite Set, aka Lily Buchana ,from Pencaitland, the land of whisky and fire. Now living in London.
AAAmusic: What inspired you to get into music?
Seeing Patti Smith growl and howl on a replay of ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’ with her shades on. She’s the coolest of the cool. Grace Slick’s melancholic mantra.
AAAmusic: What have you done?
My first EP ‘These Streets’ is out on 3rd June. I am proud of being played on Amazing Radio and Xfm. Also getting to play at End of The Road this summer!
AAAmusic: What are you like live?
I’ve no idea because I’ve never seen it. Maybe I’ll play with a mirror next time and let you know. I like to fill the whole room with my voice. Trying to make it thick and wave like, a sea of the darkest chocolate that I want everyone to enjoy.
AAAmusic: What makes you different?
I never said I was different! That’s for other people to decide. Come to my EP launch gig at The Sebright Arms on the 5th June to decide for yourself. My friend Lyndell dyes my hair with petrol. Does that make me different?
AAAmusic: Physical vs Downloading vs Streaming…How do you listen to music?
Everything, all the time, everywhere. The damn needle is broken on my record player at the moment though, which is really sad because I’m missing my usual Friday of Donna Summer and Isaac Hayes.
AAAmusic: What have you been listening to?
John Grant’s new album ‘Pale Green Ghosts’, he is the MAN. Last week I cycled all the way to Cambridge from London to see him play. I nearly fell in a canal but it was worth it.
AAAmusic: What are your aspirations for the future?
Writing, gigging, recording. More festivals please. The day after my EP Launch I’m going to Real World Studios to record a single, and the plan is to record an album in the autumn. I do all my own artwork and I have lots of ideas for illustrating the single, I can’t wait to get started.
