AAAmusic: Who are you and where are you from?

We are El Born from London. We formed late last year. I had these songs that needed a raw rock ‘n’ roll backdrop to hang them on. When I met Hils and we started playing these songs it all happened.

AAAmusic: What inspired you to get into music?

I think we were both getting a bit tired of hearing all this plastic music everywhere. It was definitely part reaction and part excitement. Sounds like a bold statement but we wanna remind people why they liked music in the first place.

AAAmusic: What have you done?

El Born is just getting started really, but we have somehow picked up an amazing following. Our live shows are the most honest thing we have and where we can connect completely with people. We have had some proud moments so far. Seeing Coldplay backing us online was a big deal for us. Also hearing ‘1982’ (our debut single) on TV (Monroe – ITV Drama) was a great little moment.

AAAmusic: What are you like live?

We have pretty much been touring all year. We’re in month seven already and have done well over 70 dates. We haven’t supported anyone worth bragging about but, again, all this is coming I’m sure. I’d say live we are at our best. We play every show like it’s our last ever show and give it absolutely everything. We wanna plant postcards in people’s heads. It’s never just a gig to us or to our fans. The audience really does make the shows.

AAAmusic: What makes you different?

I don’t believe that it’s hard to be different these days. Everyone sounds exactly the same, don’t they? El Born are the reaction to the overdose of what we see as the boring over-hyped music that seems to be everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, there is loads of good stuff coming out but by no means enough. El Born are a direct fix for anyone who feels like we do. We don’t fit in and to be honest that makes things hard for us on many levels but we are 100% original and we know we have what it takes.

AAAmusic: Physical vs Downloading vs Streaming…How do you listen to music?

I held on to my records and CDs a lot longer than most people I think. I am 100% into physical music, personally. But it’s like a pretty pointless fight now. Downloads and streaming have won hands down. I think the biggest thing lost in the vs war is value. I think people value music as a purchasable thing so much less than they ever have. This in turn has severely altered our relationship with buying music. I mean if you wanna go and buy a physical record you can’t find anywhere that actually sells them. Times have certainly changed but so has the way we consume music and it won’t go back to what it was now. We have to download and stream music now if we want to hear it but in doing so it becomes very hard to ever give it the value which made it so special before.

AAAmusic: What have you been listening to?

We love both Coldplay and Jack White’s new records. Personally, I love Swedish band Mando Diao’s new album Aelita.  In my mind they are one of the best bands in the world. New band-wise, there is a Leicester band called The Black Macks which we really rate.

AAAmusic: What are your aspirations for the future?

We have a lot of hoops to jump through over the next year but we want to play a load more shows and continue to win audiences over one by one. As long as we are moving forward we will be happy. We really believe we have everything it takes and so far we are loving every single moment.
