AAA Music Approved: False Advertising

False Advertising-Interview

Who are you and where are you from?

We’re False Advertising, an alternative noise-rock trio formed in Manchester who are influenced by a lot of great bands – a lot of who we were too young to have seen live in their heyday. I suppose we’re coming from a place of wanting to re-ignite and continue what has always been so great about raw, sweaty live music. To kick against some of the more placid genres which dominate the chart today.

What inspired you to get into music?

Music did. In all seriousness, it’s something we’ve all wanted to do from a pretty young age and we’ve each found our way into it from different sides. Josh has been in and out of bands for as long as he can remember, I did a similar thing but work freelance as a producer (for bands like The Orielles). Jen grew up playing classical violin, then got into designing band websites (and can count Royal Blood and Franz Ferdinand as clients), then decided to form her own band to design websites for.

What have you done?

We played our first gig 12 months ago and since then have released an album, self-recorded our new EP called Brainless [out today!], and played shows with the likes of Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü), Young Knives and Menace Beach.

Other recent highlights include getting to go to Abbey Road for the mastering of our upcoming Too Pure Single’s club 7″. Plus a surprisingly convincing April Fools joke where we pretended we had a major UK advertising deal by photoshopping our poster onto photos of billboards. I’m still getting messages from people who think it’s real now which is a bit weird considering we are called False Advertising.

What are you like live?

Loud! Me and Jen sometimes swap places between guitar and drums, which can be a bit disorientating – especially for us. Maybe that helps you to remember us, or not.

What makes you different?

We make all our own shit. I suppose that’s not revolutionary these days at all, but recording, production, artwork, videos – everything you see has been made by the three of us. We like to think gives listeners a bit more to get their teeth into, if the cheapness of it all doesn’t show through too much.

Physical vs Downloading vs Streaming…How do you listen to music?

All of these ways, collectively. Josh has a thing for vinyl, Jen still has an iTunes library that could actually function as a legitimate streaming service, and I’ve now moved to Spotify after knackering my hard drive, and I work as an IT administrator by day… Doh

What have you been listening to?

A lot of newish music from the likes of Milk Teeth, Black Peaks, Tigercub and Grimes. Offset by a lot of Lamb of God…

What are your aspirations for the future?

To play more gigs and visit more places. We’re just about to head out on our first ever UK tour, but hopefully that’s just the beginning…
