Ones To Watch 2012: No Ceremony

No Ceremony are one of those bands who came from nowhere.

Not much has been said about them, as they like to keep a curtain of mystery around themselves, leaving the talking to their music.

One of our bands to watch for 2012, we shall leave the talking to their videos and the splendid remixes, courtesy of Patrick Wolf and Dog Is Dead. Enjoy!

TOP BOY
BRAND NEW FOUR-PART DRAMA
Tx: OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2011

On London’s Summerhouse Estate, lives are lived along lines, and challenges come in all forms, even – especially – for kids.

Thirteen-year-old Ra’Nell (Malcolm Kamulete) finds he has to “step up and be a man” when his mentally ill mother Lisa (Sharon Duncan Brewster) is suddenly hospitalized.  At the same time his mum’s friend Heather (Kierston Wareing), pregnant and penniless, enlists his help in a dangerous plan she has concocted [...]

A Tribute to Bert Jansch

bertj16

“I’m Bert” said this modest, quiet and gentle man as he began a hypnotic performance to an audience at the New Theatre, Oxford. Bert Jansch never searched for celebrity. As his wife Loren said recently, he was “not one for showing off”.

Scottish born Jansch sadly passed away on Wednesday at the age of 67 at a hospice in Hampstead. He was a prolific, influential songwriter and a masterful acoustic guitarist. His music was unique. It was distinctive and crossed genres, [...]

Introducing Beat Ratio

Beat Ratio is a musical project started as a reaction to the the endless possibilities of modern music software. Being fed up with getting lost in useless perfectionism, this past Summer Gabriele aka Beat Ratio got himself a bunch of cassettes on freecycle, a 4-track recorder, a sequencer and decided to turn the computer off and start from scratch. Working exclusively on tape; from [...]

Introducing Air Castles

Air Castles will release their new single Gold in September – if you are not familiar with them, this is a perfect excuse to go and check them out!

‘Gold’ is the brand new single from Anglo-Swedish newcomers Air Castles. It’s a striking song full of beautifully crafted intricate soundscapes with a heart melting melody and catchy vocals.

Welding guitars, synths, bass and drums with Air Castles’ brainchild Max Mansson’s unforgettable vocals, the song is equally impressive as it is catchy. They [...]

Foo Fighters – Back and Forth

Oxford Vue 7th April 2011

Foo Fighters steam live footage of their new album ‘Wasting Light‘??, and an in depth documentary covering the bands history?? – well it got me interested!

I take a steady drive to the Oxford Vue on this hot evening and am greeted by a queue stretching 2 floors. And that’s not good, considering its a small (ish) cinema, and there’s no way I’m getting my nachos in this sea of fans (I determine that these are in fact ‘fans’ by [...]

Introducing Berri Farley

Sometimes the classics are the best – from the Motown of the Isley Brothers and Smokey Robinson to soul legends like Gladys Knight and Etta James, there is a timeless appeal to beautifully crafted songs performed with soul, verve and above all, honesty – Berri Farley is a singer who clearly understands this power.  Soon to release her debut, self titled E.P – Farley’s voice is powerful and rich, more suited to a woman twice her age, yet [...]

Introducing Black Market Serotonin

If this were a film narrated by Morgan Freeman, we’d say, “every story has a beginning”. This is certainly true of the relationship between Superstar Destroyer Records and Black Market Serotonin. After three skinny twenty-somethings approached the original Superstar Destroyer team (then planning an alternative clubnight), and asked if they were into progressive rock, who could have known that this would be the result, six months later?

Combining the Nirvana-meets Radiohead aggression of the first Muse album with a [...]
