A Silent Film @Bullingdon Arms

David Livingstone - 18/05/2009

Oxford, 14th May 2009

One of my favourites, Oxfords' own A Silent Film have been on the radar for the last few years treating all to a parade of indie-piano-electro type songs in their own unique fashion. Some may say that as the piano is a major player in this 4 piece set up that their music leans towards the Keane scene, but it does'nt take long before realising that this is not the case. Musically this band are a more mature melodic force on a par with Arcade Fire but inspired by world events which resonate through each song.

In a tone not to dissimilar to some other nameless Oxford bands, ASF push into glittery instrumental intro's which capture the crowd before leading into bursts of guitar which sets this band apart from most other live acts on the UK touring circuit at this time. Their melodies and songwriting are way much better than i remember from years gone by, and in this medium sized venue they prove to have a spellbinding stage presence only heightened more by strong vocals and mesmerizing percussion. With a sound this big I hope they will make a big dent in the festival scene this summer.

Oh, and you MUST check out the bands cover of Underworld's Born Slippy - blindin' & CD The City That Sleeps.
