dEUS @ Turin

sPAZIALE Festival, 14th July 2008

Some nights can’t simply get it right. dEUS’ show under the stars at sPAZIALE 2008 simply wasn’t a night to remember. Or better, it was, for special reasons. In both cases anyway, the band was on top form and willing to deliver an awesome concert like the ones they’re giving on this Vantage Point tour. Probably their best to date, playing incredible solid sets spanning from their classics to the new material.

Warnings that something wrong was in the air were had around the time the band should have come onstage, with PA going off while some music was being played soft. Something sinister ahead. By the time they were on, kicking off with last album’s opener When She Comes Down, guitars still weren’t coming but all sounded sorted with follow-up Instant Street, whose incendiary final riffs were glorious as ever. Fell Off The Floor, Manand Is A Robot still blistering, right before the power went off for the first time during the show. The band, upset but toally in charge of themselves and back to please the audience and enjoy the gig, looked confident and ready for a second start. This time Smokers Reflect made space for mellow melodies before a quick jump back Theme From Turnpike and on to Slow and Favourite Game for high energy guitars and vocals. Right into the final part of Vantage Point’s single The Architect the PA went off again but this time Tom Barman was totally determined to finish the song. Picking up his semi-acoustic guitar and bandmates for a funny unplugged ending. With the audience getting more and more depressed with technical shit going on (lights never worked well too and the band often played in semi-dark – they didn’t seem to care anyway), the show started back with Pocket Revolution’s What We Talk About and Nothing Really Ends, ending with guitars on feedback that were welcoming bass lines for Bad Timing. Unluckily the mighty song wouldn’t last until the refrain as power cut off for the third time.

Only a thing is pretty clear: only a few bands would behave like they did, never losing hope in being able to play again even after all these annoying problems. Most band would have given up likely after the second time (and I know band that wouldn’t have come back after the first). Around 00.10am they came back for the fourth time trying to end the show (going over curfew time) with all time classic Suds And Soda but the dream didn’t even reach the first sung lines. It was definitely no more, and the final end to a very bad luck night. However there was still something not to get too upset as they looked in fantastic shape and will probably be back to give what was missed in the Autumn. After the show, when the audience could get free beer as a partial refund, the band stayed to cheer fans and sign autographs in happy spirits. If only the rain hadn’t come over the previous weekend giving trouble to the electric system, I would be here talking about an unbelievable night. Still dEUS did their best to achieve it. Hats off anyway.
