Mamas Gun – The Life & Soul

| On 06, Jun 2011

Impressively spanning genres, channeling the sounds of the various artists and times that have influenced this record, Mamas Gun’s latest release The Life and Soul, flawlessly and simultaneously creates a sound that is at once retro and contemporary.  Furthermore, whilst palpably drawing on a myriad of influences, Mamas Gun manage to retain their own highly individual sound, which is just one of the triumphs of this great release.

The tight arrangements of this album are made up of rousing hooks and captivating melodies that are only enhanced by Andy Platts’ impeccable vocal efforts. Platts’ vocals are the driving force of the record and the source of its excellence; his voice is truly beautiful with a gritty edge and an impressive range. Highlights of the release include the effortlessly smooth bluesy-rock track Get a High and the soul-funk of On A String (a perfect chill-out summer track for 2011). My only negative comment about this release is that the cover of Queen’s Bicycle Race, although well done, seems incongruous with the general flow of the album.

The Life and Soul exhibits the enviable sheer talent of Mamas Gun (who seem to continue to get better!) and should be a great success.
