Baths – Cerulean

| On 09, Aug 2010

My initial reaction to Apologetic Shoulder Blades, the opening track to Baths debut album Cerulean, was; Mary Poppins remix.

The angelic choir like vocals contrasted but oddly enough fitted with the techno electronic sound accompanying it, creating a fusion of musical sound which has to be heard to be understood. However, the sound of the angelic choir was quickly replaced with a voice of emotion by the second track; Lovely Bloodflow. This constant twist of emotions between absolute joy and sadness was ongoing throughout the album, becoming more in sync as the album progressed. I must admit it confused me at first, but halfway through track four; Heart, my mind opened up and I begun to understand what I was hearing allowing me to enjoy the truly unique sound which Baths offer.

Cerulean  reminded me of a maze created by sound, you control what your doing at first but, you will eventually wonder and get lost, however like every maze you’ll eventually find your way out and always remember the time you got lost. Although I didn’t understand this album at first and was a bit taken back by it, making me very judgmental of what I was hearing, now that I’ve listened to all of it, it has grown on me and I quite enjoy it. Strange and enjoyable. A unique sound, you should definitely give them a chance, you may be pleasantly surprised.
