So Spring is here and the days are getting longer. Soon the clocks will be going back too to lead us towards the summer, where in July the Garden Festival Croatia returns for its 6th year of music, travel and adventure. The Garden Festival is the original and founding event which has captured the imaginations of all who have come to this beautiful stretch of coastline. It has not only placed Croatia on the map of those looking for fun in the sun a little more off the beaten track with the unique Garden Petrcane site which also houses several other intimate festivals from July to August. Drawing upon a truly global crowd, party people and culture seekers flock from all over the world, converging on a tiny slice of paradise which perfectly combines an intimate festival feel with a sun-soaked and fun-filled holiday. Now a new wave of lineups additions have been released which brings many new live acts and DJs to Croatia.

There are now several more live acts confirmed for this year’s festival., each encapsulating the vibrancy and colour of the Garden Festival. Ras Tweed hosts the main stage for three nights and will also perform with Different Drummer; Ras has performed with some of the world’s leading bands, groups and artists during his globe-trotting travels and brings his unique crowd-rousing style to Croatia.

Daniel Collás, Quinn Luke (Bing Ji Ling) and Bart Davenport – aka Incarnations – are assorted members and associates of Phenomenal Handclap Band, Embassy Sound Productions, DFA artists Q&A and the Kings Of Convenience’s touring band – three friends with enough musical guises, side-projects, collaborations and production jobs to fill the annual itinerary of your average musician twice over. Their debut album dropped in Dec 2010, laced with fleeting melodies and sultry grooves; it’s perfect music to entrance the main stage. Perennial Garden Festival faves Crazy P also sing live – arguably one of the festival’s favourites, the mellifluous voice of Danielle Moore is one more set to stun Petrcane. The guys will be debuting new material at The Garden which will be showcased for the first time in Europe – this is the first chance to be wowed by what Danielle, Jim and Chris have been up to in the studio.

On a DJ tip, New York based duo Wolf and Lamb are sonic scientists who craft deep disco, crate-dug house and classics from the vaults, along with their own upfront edits and cuts. After taking the Garden by storm in 2010, Qool DJ Marv returns for a DJ set encompassing his genre-spanning eclecticism; an evening of QDM can include a mind-boggling array of selections spanning R&B, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Latin, House, Jazz, Funk, Rock and Soul classics, and Eclectic beats from around the world. The Phenomenal Handclap Band are also on hand for a DJ set.

Steve Cobby DJs as Fila Brazilia, fusing electronica, ambient, techno, rock, funk and dub together into heads down grooves. Having released on many labels, from Pork Recordings to Azuli and their Another Late Night series, Fila’s set is a mouth-watering prospect in the sunny Croatian climes. Over on the Resident Advisor boat and club party, the latest guests are Benoit & Sergio, two enigmatic producers whose music has already garnered considerable momentum behind them; What I’ve Lost EP on Bruno Pronsato’s thesongsays imprint, and the more restrained follow up Midnight People on Spectral Sound, with a DFA EP dropping in early 2011 whilst they currently are riding high in the charts with their massive Walk n Talk release on the super-hyped Visionquest label.

Jacques Renault’s disco productions and re-edits have seen him rise to prominence, holding down residencies in NYC’s famed Happy Endings and Tribeca Grand venues, along with being a regular contributor to super-deeply dope Beats In Space radio. The widely feted Bristolian Julio Bashmore also stars, alongside legendary beat-digging duo Kon and Amir. Their from-the-vaults searching for rare cuts and edits sees them as music-treasure hunters seeking only the rarest and finest disco, jazz and hip-hop tracks, to create their revered sonic odysseys. Begin, Wolf Music and The Groovers all also star.

There’s also a Late Night Audio vs ISM club session at Barbarellas featuring Toby Tobias, Danny Clark (LNA), Yam Who?, Andy Williams and Sean Gorham (ISM). Late Night Audio is a London club whose disco and house roots have flourished with it regarded as one of the coolest underground sessions in the capital having hosted Motor City Drum Ensemble, Mark E, Radio Slave and many more.

Two of Croatia’s leading lights, Burek and Concorde Club, also star, adding further weight to the country’s burgeoning music scene. Sergej and Pytzek represent new Zagreb label Burek and Kelzo, Savage and Hrwo E feature for Zagreb’s Concorde Club, forming the new wave of Croatia’s thriving disco and house scene.

The Garden Festival… Back To Our Roots for 2011

2011 sees the festival going Back to Our Roots – which takes place across one joyously long weekend, a full seven days and nights of beatific beats in the sun and late night excursions on the stunning site which juts into the invitingly azure Adriatic waters. Set in the 900-year old fishing village of Petrcane, there are bars and restaurants along the promenade offering fine fresh fish caught that morning. Lazing the hours away beneath the sun whilst sipping a cocktail is the only way to start the day; later, as the music tempo increases, perhaps catch the sunset at the Tiki Bar whilst dancing in the water, or maybe it’s one of the live headliners on the fully outdoor main stage.

The Garden Festival continues not only to capture but truly enrich peoples’ imaginations – a true fusion of relaxing holiday and riotous festival, situated in an area close to the historic city of Zadar. Pristine national parks, secluded beaches and hundreds of islands are close by, with Croatia an easy country to travel around.

Keep checking for flight deals to Croatia from the UK – and Europe too – on airlines including Ryanair, Easyjet, Jet2, Wizz Air, German Wings and Croatia Airlines, as routes have now been released and there are some bargains to be had.

Please note for any accommodation enquiries for the village of Petrcane where the Garden Festival is held, please contact gail@thegardenzadar.com for a variety of apartments, studios and rooms.
