Eliza Doolittle – Pack Up

| On 05, Jul 2010

Well this is a first. What we have here is a young English girl with a sumptuous soul voice, who sings in her own accent. She doesn’t sound American. That is unprecedented, and I may overuse that word, but it is genuinely true in the case of Eliza Doolittle. Pack Up is a great pop single with one hell of a chorus, sampled from the 1915 war time standard ‘Pack up Your Troubles’ in your ‘Old Kit Bag ‘of all things, yet it works so well you’d think that it belonged in the song.

It’s only fitting that the sunniest song released this year should contain tweeting, the literal kind, and it’s that kind of mix between quirkiness and sheer pop majesty that makes this a genuinely exciting record. One to watch for definite.
