THE SWORD ANNOUNCE UK TOUR IN MAY

Texan metal warriors The Sword are pleased to announce UK tour dates for May 2011. The band had to re-schedule touring the Warp Riders album last October due to former drummer Trivett Wingo suddenly leaving the band for personal reasons but since then the band have hit the road with a new drummer. These 5 UK performances will feature the formidable skills of notorious intergalactic bounty drummer, Kevin Fender, a veteran of the Austin music scene best known for his [...]

Caitlin Rose Announces Twisted Folk UK tour with Peter Wolf Crier

caitlinrose

Twisted Folk returns with another stellar line-up for 2010 with a double bill from the USA. Critically-lauded Nashville resident Caitlin Rose will headline alongside newcomers from Minneapolis Peter Wolf Crier.

Having spent the last five years making a name for itself for representing the best in modern folk as well as pushing the boundaries of the genre, there’s no denying Twisted Folks’ credentials with previous artists including such luminaries as Nina Nastasia, Jeffrey Lewis, Howe Gelb, Jose Gonzalez, Vetiver and [...]

AM – Self Preservation

Ironically enough, it takes a lot of effort for something to sound truly effortless, and Tulsa born, New Orleans raised artist AM has pulled it off spectacularly on his Debut UK single, Self Preservation. Opening on a gorgeous electric guitar melody, backed by brushed acoustic guitars and the simplest of drums, the song doesn’t deviate much from that formula, but it doesn’t have to in order to be a great song.

As the song progresses melodicas add a certain amount of [...]

Pendulum – Witchcraft

Already one of the defining bands of 2010, Pendulum’s summer profile will receive another huge boost with the release of the new single ‘Witchcraft’ on July 19th on Earstorm / Warner Bros. Records. The single is taken from the band’s recently released third album ‘Immersion’ which went straight to the top of the charts..

Witchcraft is a good electro- rock ballad featuring Rob Swire’s vocals that turns into an energising drum ‘n’ bass beats supported by a crunching riff.

Pendulum have a [...]

Toro Y Moi – Leave Everywhere

South Carolina’s “Toro Y Moi” (a.k.a Chaz Bundick) is nominally one of the main purveyors of what is worryingly known as Chillwave but this new single places the lineage to a more early rock ‘n’ roll, soul sound, with astounding results. “Leave Everywhere” saunters along pleasingly on Spector-esque drums and a maddeningly catchy surf guitar line. It does peter out by the end, as if Bundick ran out of ideas and let the song just stop, but it doesn’t stop [...]

Shit Browne – Electronics

Still vying for the hotly contested title of “world’s worst band name” is Parisian quintet “Shit Browne”, who thankfully enough create a racket that is not quite as bad as their excruciating moniker, but not earth shaking by any stretch. The band attempt, with varying degrees of success, to combine the dance music they’re familiar with (the entire band are made up of ex DJ’s) with classic Manchester sounds such as The Charlatans and Oasis. “Electronics” is the bands love [...]

Orphan Boy – Popsong

Someone has been visited by the spirit of Ian Curtis. Orphan Boy’s ‘Popsong’ has a deceptively mainstream surface that suits its name, the indie rock sound we’re all too familiar these days dancing across a glassy veneer of more of the same with a regional accent affectation and that kind of melodic progression.

But beneath the glassy veneer, a much darker and deeper river flows. The haunting keyboards, the jangling guitars, and rambling percussion placed forwards in the mix, [...]

Jamie Liddell – I Wanna Be Your Telephone

Sometimes soul can be an incredibly subversive and interesting genre. More than most give it credit for. And Jamie Liddell is a relatively new addition to this canon or soul-influenced mavericks, using it as a springboard for his own distinct style on his latest single, ‘I Wanna Be Your Telephone’. The lead track starts off with some heavy synthesised percussion abuse and what sounds like a mechanical donkey, before the funky bassline and electro-pop hooks creep in. The [...]

The Beatsteaks – Jane Became Insane

In case it passed you by, there is a band from Germany called The Beatsteaks and recently they released an album which I would without a moment’s hesitation say is in the top 5 releases of 2010 as far as I’m concerned. Not so long after that, we’re here again with a single from said album, the blistering ‘Jane Became Insane’.

I suppose the easiest way to describe this track to someone who’s never heard it would be to [...]

Beat the Radar – By the Sea/Miracles

I really don’t want to make a habit of this but I find myself agreeing with what The Daily Mirror has to say. The accursed tabloid said “Pucker up, Indie Rock, here comes a kiss of life.” And listening to Beat the Radars new single, they are actually right! It’s been a long time since an indie band has called bands like The Fall, Sonic Youth and Husker Dü (y’know, actual indie bands?) major influences and after the great Pigeon [...]

Mark Ronson & The Business International – Bang, Bang, Bang

‘Bang, Bang, Bang’, the new single by Mark Ronson & The Business International is a phenomenally resounding triumph of style over substance. Shimmying an acoustic synth line simultaneously underneath and over some heavily processed vocals, as well as rapping from collaborator Q-Tip. Just in case you are wondering what is being said in the chorus, it is “je te plumerai la tête,” roughly translating to “I will pluck your head” part of a French nursery rhyme. No, me neither.

Of course, [...]

Standard Fare – Philadelphia

Right. I think we’re all in agreement. Long distance relationships are bullshit. The whole, fundamental point of a relationship is that the two parties see one another on a regular basis, enjoy their company (interpret that how you wish), part company, and then see them again in the near future after that. If you have a substantial distance in between you, that you don’t want to doctor by actually moving closer together, it’s not worth it!!! However if it does [...]

The Fanclub – Madman/Bitter Boys and Graceless Girls

What first hit me when I was listening to The Fanclub’s Madman was how enjoyable a track it is. It manages to be catchy without sacrificing its emotional element, a feat that may sound simple, but that a lot of bands somehow can’t seem to master. Madman has everything you could want from a track of its kind – a melodic beat, excellent instrumental sequences, guitar solos – all without ever seeming formulaic. The vocals in particular stood out to [...]
