Portico Quartet – Tomorrow at KOKO

Portico Quartet are one of AAAmusic’s absolute favourite bands – an atmospheric fusion of contemporary jazz, experimental electronic music and minimalist post rock. Their Roundhouse show last year was thrilling, but it was their Worldwide Festival 2013 show at the Theatre De La Mer, Sete, that was truly memorable – not only was it the definite festival highlight, but the beauty of their music coupled with the sea-view and sunset was one of the greatest musical events AAAmusic has ever witnessed.

Their self-titled third album last year was cruelly ignored by the final Mercury Prize list, but it was one of the best 2012 releases. This show comes in support of their new double release – a live album and a remix album featuring the likes of SBTRKT and Scrathca DVA. It is a heady introduction to a band intent on pushing the boundaries of both jazz and electronica – with the live album showcases their progressive, sprawling tendencies, and the remix album featuring barely recognisable club tunes.

London’s KOKO is the perfect setting for Portico Quartet, and this week’s gig is recommended for any fan of intelligent instrumental music – whether that be rock, jazz or electronic.

Support comes in the form of live producer and musician Anchorsong, who creates electronic music using sampling equipment and keys, as well as DJ set by the formidable Micachu.
