Elsie – Time To Go

Elsie is a promising contender in the already busy music world of independent female 20-somethings. Our Liverpudlian ladette seemingly channels Blondie in this quirky piece of guitar-driven power pop.
‘Time To Go’ is the story of a short-lived rocky relationship during an alcohol-fuelled weeknight as told from the perspective of an alpha-female. I’m sure that won’t have you rushing to YouTube but this is irresistibly enjoyable and unlike her counterparts, a pleasing listen for both genders.

Time To Go is out on [...]

Christa Vi – Your Heart

Your Heart is the latest single from London based Australian/German singer-songwriter Christa Vi. The single combines dancey synth with tip-toeing piano, melodic harmonies and beautiful vocals.

It’s the kind of single that mixes an intimate, emotional sound with a catchy beat that makes you want to get up and dance. There are several remixes of the single which will surely make it popular in clubs as it makes for prefect dance as well as pop music.

The lyrics aren’t the [...]

Mummy Short Arms – Silicone Dream

If you’re a fan of Kings of Leon which, let’s face it, most of us are thanks to ‘Sex on Fire’, chances are you’ll at least appreciate Mummy Short Arms’ latest single ‘Silicone Dream’. Whether you’ll like it or not depends entirely on whether you’re a fan of the constant shouty singing style they seem to deploy within the song.
Usually, the lyrics would be spoken about and there would be some kind of discussion as to whether they were good [...]

Matt Norris and the Moon – Roots Below and Eyes of a Storm

AAAmusic logo

This is somewhat bland acoustic guitar fare – agreeable enough, but overly simple, repetitive and lacking in any particularly original musical content or vibrant character. It’s competently executed, true to the folk genre and certainly not painful on the ears, but I personally wouldn’t bother sitting through it more than once. Standard sentimental harmonies, clichéd lyrics and the familiar gentle, fragile male vocals – supposedly indicating a sensitive and deep soul – all combine to produce music which some may [...]

The Diamond Noise – Never Say Never Say Never

Never Say Never Say Never is the promising debut single from The Diamond Noise. It’s a two-minute identity stamp from four lads sounding like a band already well established. This London four-piece craft flamboyant punk rock with balls still firmly intact that you’ll be hard pushed not to air drum to. The Diamond Noise may find it hard to stand out amongst other bands for being considered too generic although it is strangely refreshing to hear a band with a [...]

No Ceremony/// – Heartbreak

No Ceremony/// are a Mancunian act which has guarded its anonymity closely. Are they a duo? Are they a collective? Who knows. All of this secrecy heightens the wonder and excitement you feel when you encounter this release, their single Heartbreak. It is music to dance to and to feel doomed to, while still cheering and raising your fist in the air. No Ceremony/// sounds like a loud mash between Daft Punk and New Order. The guest appearance of Joey [...]

Niko – You’re So Boring

you're so boring 210x210

The hypnotic drum beats draw you in from the beginning, accompanied by melodic harmonies and a bass-line that’ll follow you around all day. It’s insanely catchy, but is it also good?

Soft synth contrasts with the blunt tone of Niko’s vocals. The music and vocals aren’t the most impressive, but they are polished and the song is an interesting modern take on the theme of a failing relationship.

‘Say something original before I go home… But it’s your video games [...]

Soap&Skin – Voyage Voyage

I… honestly don’t know what to say about this, beyond the fact that it’s beautiful. More beautiful than most covers of obscure 80’s French number one hits from Austrian born experimental singer songwriters have any right to be. Maybe it’s down to the fact that, not being fluent in French, I have no idea as to what the woman behind Soap&Skin, Anja Plaschg, is actually singing but the sense of mystery this track has is overwhelming. Coming on like Amanda [...]

Eik – Love Storm

images

Electronica which is aiming for that slow, hypnotic vibe, really needs to know what it’s doing; otherwise it can verge on the dreary and dull side. There needs to be enough invention and skill involved in order to keep the listener interested – it’s fairly straightforward creating decent sounding electronic music these days, but quality songwriting is still a rare gift.
Eik are just on the dividing line between atmospheric and bland. Love Storm for example is a listenable pop [...]

RCSA – Captain

RSCA is the one-man dream pop orchestra of Ben Mercer and after having several demo songs float around the internet for some time, he brings us his debut single, ‘Captain’.
During a time in music where there are more shoegazers and loopers than ever, RCSA has his identity very much stamped when it comes to his brand of extroverted chamber music. It’s a deep and thoughtful take on the electro-pop genre that see’s an ambient yet piercing guitar, subtle electronics, big [...]

In Golden Tears – Underneath the Balance

Underneath the Balance is the second single from Hamburg’s In Golden Tears. The single is a mix of haunting vocals, pulsating baselines, melodic synth and the heartbeat of drums to make for something pretty powerful. The song has a dark and melancholic feel to it, much down to Patrick H. Kowalewski’s cold yet excellent vocals.

The music video for the song captures this cold and sinister beauty. The themes of race, romance and especially death are very prominent (with [...]

MISS DAVINA LEE – It’s A Love

Miss Davina Lee Cooke is a singer songwriter from North West London who grew up listening to Madonna and Salt n Pepa and was later inspired by Nirvana and PJ Harvey.
Her band comprises Davina Lee Cooke, Roald Hellum, Angus Wilson, Gareth Ashton and Jenny Green.
It’s a Love, her ten track debut album, was recorded at The Coconut Lodge and will be released by Smooth Exchange on 30th April, 2012.
Bedbugs featured on a Hewlett Packard advertisement and its popularity drove them [...]

Sweet Lights – Are We Gonna Work It Out

Sweet Lights’ new single ‘Are We Gonna Work It Out’ begins with a bang, and then it just seems to fall from there. That’s not to say it is a bad track, it just seems to be leading you somewhere that it never actually takes you; piano builds, guitars step up, drums begin to bang and Shai Halperin repeatedly asks “are we gonna work it out?” then it ends. This may well be a clever piece of song writing, but [...]

Marina & the Diamonds – Primadonna

Ok, I don’t want to be cruel, or judge superficially, but that’s what I call a “sell out”.
Marina & the Diamonds changed their music roots and influences, passing from Tori Amos or Gwen Stefani with a touch of Dresden Dolls, to Katy Perry. The new single, Primadonna, taken from the album “Electra Heart” out on 30th April, is a plastic song, halfway between the sound of Russell Brand’s ex-wife and lady Ciccone, whose album was not very welcomed indeed.
Vocals are [...]

CORNSHED SISTERS – Dresden

Cornshed Sisters

The Cornshed Sisters are four singer songwriters influenced by the north eastern folk tradition of Tyne and Wear.
They comprise Liz Corney (Kenickie), Marie Nixon, Jennie Redmond and Cath Stephens. Their 10 track debut album Tell Tales was co-produced by Field Music’s Peter Brewis.
Their single Dresden, taken from the album and written by unknown Les Cox Sportifs’, finds an unlikely metaphor for love in the RAF’s bombing of Germany in the Second World War. Distinctive and beautifully entwined vocal harmonies combine [...]
